Mark O'Brien's story is one of the most remarkable in British football. At 16, days after making his senior debut for Derby County, a routine academy medical scan revealed a leaking aortic valve. The surgeon's verdict was blunt: without open-heart surgery within the year, he would likely die. The valve was three times the size it should have been for someone his age.
O'Brien had the operation in October 2009. Doctors gave him a maximum of five years of professional football. He played for eleven.
